Roof tent travel in France

Camping outside developed sites requires landholder consent and remains subject to protected-area and local restrictions.

France has one of Europe's most developed campsite networks, and some sites explicitly accept vehicles with roof tents. Outside developed sites, the legal position depends on landholder consent, national restrictions and any additional local rules.

Overnight and camping rules

Roof tent overview

Many French campsites accept roof tents, and some list "tente de toit" or vehicle pitches explicitly. Camping La Ferme near Lake Annecy is our verified example, with pitches explicitly offered for vehicles with roof tents.

Overnight stays

French Urban Planning Code article R111-32 permits camping outside roads and public ways with the agreement of the person entitled to use the land, subject to the other rules in the code. A roof tent on a vehicle must also comply with parking signs and local rules.

Wild camping

Articles R111-33 and R111-34 prohibit isolated camping in specified protected or sensitive places and allow local planning documents or mayoral orders to prohibit it in additional areas. Do not treat bivouac or roadside parking as automatic permission; check the municipality, landholder and site signage.

Driving and access

A large motorway network (mostly tolled) plus mountain roads in the Alps. Check for height and seasonal access on minor roads and passes.
