Roof tent travel in Germany

A large campsite network offers practical roof-tent stops; roadside and wild-camping rules still require location-specific checks.

Germany is a core RoofTentAtlas market, with thousands of campsites across the coast, lakes, forests and Alpine regions. This hub starts with source-reviewed sites whose current booking information explicitly includes roof tents.

Overnight and camping rules

Roof tent overview

Roof tents are accepted at the source-reviewed campsites listed here, based on current roof-tent pitch information. The exact pitch, arrival window and site rules can change, so confirm the booking category with the operator before travel.

Overnight stays

Germany has nationwide road-parking rules, while camping, nature access and protected-area restrictions also depend on state and local law. A legal parking space does not automatically make every deployed roof tent a permitted campsite. Use an authorised campsite or a place that expressly accepts the stay.

Wild camping

Federal nature law establishes a general right to enter parts of the open landscape for recreation, but it does not create a general right to drive onto land or camp there. State forest and nature laws, protected-area rules, municipal restrictions, landowner rights and signs must all be respected.

Driving and access

Germany has an extensive motorway and regional-road network. Follow local parking signs, low-emission-zone requirements, site arrival windows and any vehicle-size restrictions.

Rules last reviewed: 2026-08-27. Rules vary by region, season and local authority. Always confirm with the local authority or campsite before travelling.
