Roof tent travel in Norway

Right-to-roam rules cover tent camping; vehicle access and parking are separate.

Norway's right to roam gives broad access to uncultivated land and permits responsible tent camping, but driving and parking a vehicle are governed separately. A roof tent traveller must satisfy both sets of rules.

Overnight and camping rules

Roof tent overview

Roof tents are accommodated at Norwegian campsites, which generally offer vehicle pitches with electricity and sanitary facilities. Lofoten Beach Camp on the Lofoten Islands is our verified example.

Overnight stays

The Norwegian Environment Agency states that tent camping in open country is normally allowed for up to 48 hours in one lowland location, at least 150 metres from an inhabited house or cabin, subject to local bylaws. Because a roof tent is attached to a vehicle, also check road and parking signs and use a campsite or an expressly permitted overnight place when vehicle-based camping is unclear.

Wild camping

The Outdoor Recreation Act covers access and passage through uncultivated land, while motor traffic there is governed by separate motor-traffic legislation. Do not drive off road to create a roof-tent pitch. Park lawfully, follow local signs and confirm that deploying the tent is permitted at that location.

Driving and access

Scenic but often narrow coastal roads, ferries and tunnels. Check ferry schedules and seasonal road closures in the north.
