Roof tent travel in Switzerland

Rules vary by canton and municipality; vehicle overnighting must be checked separately from alpine bivouacking.

Switzerland has no uniform nationwide rule for camping outside campsites. Cantons, municipalities and protected areas can impose restrictions, and guidance for small-tent alpine bivouacs does not automatically apply to a roof tent vehicle.

Overnight and camping rules

Roof tent overview

Roof tents are accommodated at Swiss campsites with vehicle pitches. Camping Jungfrau in Lauterbrunnen is our verified example, with pitches for tents, caravans, motorhomes and cars with roof tents, plus a restaurant.

Overnight stays

The Swiss Alpine Club states that the legal situation is not uniform and recommends checking cantonal and municipal rules. Its camping and bivouacking guidance does not cover sleeping in vehicles. Roof tent travellers should therefore use a campsite or confirm parking and overnight permission with the municipality, landholder or site operator.

Wild camping

For small non-vehicle groups, SAC guidance says a considerate single night above the treeline is often unproblematic where no contrary rule applies. It also identifies protected areas where free camping is prohibited. This is not permission for a roof tent vehicle: vehicle access, parking and overnight rules must be checked separately.

Driving and access

Excellent roads but strict rules; a motorway vignette is required. Mountain passes close in winter.
