Roof tent travel in United Kingdom

Scotland, England and Wales have different access rules; none creates a general right to camp with a vehicle.

Camping rules differ across the United Kingdom. Scotland's access rights include responsible lightweight tent camping but exclude motor vehicles; England and Wales generally require an official campsite or the landholder's permission. Roof tent travellers must also follow parking and local rules.

Overnight and camping rules

Roof tent overview

Roof tents are accommodated at UK campsites. Kilvrecht Campsite in Scotland is our verified example, where the official operator accepts standard roof tents and lists grass and hardstanding pitches.

Overnight stays

In Scotland, access rights can cover lightweight tent camping in small numbers for a few nights, but they do not include motor vehicles. In England, open-access rights normally exclude both camping and driving. In Wales, official guidance says wild camping requires the landholder's permission. A roof tent should therefore use a campsite or a place that expressly permits both the vehicle and overnight stay.

Wild camping

Do not apply Scotland's lightweight wild-camping rules to a roof tent vehicle or to the rest of the UK. Check the relevant nation's guidance, obtain landholder permission where required, and follow parking signs and local restrictions. Northern Ireland has separate access arrangements and should be checked locally before travel.

Driving and access

Drive on the left. Single-track roads are common in the Highlands, with passing places; check seasonal closures and midge season in summer.
