First Roof Tent Trip Checklist

The first roof tent trip is where most mistakes happen — almost all of them preventable with a checklist. Work through this list before and during your first nights out.

Vehicle and roof rack

• Confirm the vehicle’s dynamic roof load and the roof rack capacity are sufficient for the tent plus any extra kit.
• Check the rack is correctly fitted and torqued, and that the tent mounting hardware matches the rack type.
• Reconfirm the numbers before adding awnings, storage boxes or other accessories.

Campsite confirmation

• Choose a campsite that explicitly allows roof tents or vehicle-on-pitch access.
• Confirm a one-night stay is possible, whether booking is required, and the arrival and check-in times.
• Ask about height barriers and the pitch surface before you drive.

Weather and season

• Check the forecast for wind and rain — high-sided vehicles and elevated tents are more exposed.
• Confirm the campsite is open on your dates; many European sites are seasonal.
• Know the fire and barbecue rules for the region before planning to cook outside.

Setup and levelling

• Park on the most level ground available and use levelling ramps if needed.
• Clear space for the ladder and confirm it reaches firm ground.
• Practise opening and closing the tent at home before the trip.

Bedding and sleep

• Pack bedding suited to the overnight temperature, not just the daytime temperature.
• Keep the mattress and sleeping gear inside the tent if the model allows it to close with bedding stored.
• Bring a head torch for the ladder at night.

Water, food and cooking

• Confirm drinking-water access on the pitch or at the site.
• Match your cooking method to the campsite rules — gas, charcoal, electric or none.
• Store food securely and keep cooking away from the tent fabric.

Lighting and power

• Check whether electricity is available and bring the correct hook-up cable if you plan to use it.
• Carry a power bank or lantern independent of the campsite supply.

Safety and departure checks

• Never drive with the tent open or unlatched.
• Do a final walk-around before departure: tent closed and secured, ladder stowed, rack tight, no kit left on the ground.
• Leave the pitch as you found it.
