Why "dogs allowed" is not the whole story: leash rules, pet fees, breed and number limits, beach restrictions, and keeping a dog safe in a roof tent.
Camping with a dog in a roof tent works well, but “dogs allowed” on a campsite listing rarely tells you everything you need to know. Rules differ between countries, between campsites, and even between different parts of the same site.
“Dogs allowed” is not the whole story
A campsite that accepts dogs may still restrict where a dog can go. Beaches, swimming areas, playgrounds, buildings and even certain pitch areas are often dog-free. Read the site’s pet conditions rather than assuming access everywhere.
Leash rules and supervision
Leash requirements vary. Many campsites require dogs to be kept on a lead at all times, and several require dogs to be walked off-site and never left alone on the pitch. Some sites, such as Camping Bled, state that dogs must not be left alone in a tent or vehicle and must be supervised at all times.
Fees and breed or number limits
Some campsites charge a pet fee; others allow dogs free. Some set a maximum number of dogs per pitch — Camping Bled, for example, allows a maximum of two dogs per pitch. A small number of sites restrict certain breeds, so check the conditions directly if you have any doubt.
Beaches and water
Dogs are frequently banned from swimming beaches or restricted to specific water access. Some sites, such as Lofoten Beach Camp, allow dogs but require them to be kept on a leash; water access and strong currents are separate considerations. Always check local beach signage.
Never leave a dog in a closed vehicle or an unattended tent
A closed vehicle heats up quickly even in mild weather, and a dog left alone in a roof tent can panic, damage the tent or escape from height. Take your dog with you, or arrange supervision — this is both a welfare and a campsite-rule issue.
